The EU Health Policy Platform, hosted by the European Commission’s Directorate-General for Health and Food Safety, will present a webinar titled “European Reference Network Evaluation: The Way Forward” on December 4, 2024, from 10:00 to 11:15 CET. This live event will unveil the findings of a comprehensive evaluation report on the European Reference Networks (ERNs), published on November 29, 2024.

The report evaluates the performance and impact of 24 ERNs and 836 healthcare providers across 24 EU member states and Norway, five years after their inception. The study, conducted by an independent evaluation body, includes data from self-assessments, document reviews, stakeholder interviews, on-site audits, and other sources. It highlights the critical role ERNs play in addressing rare diseases and complex medical conditions while also identifying areas for improvement to strengthen their sustainability and impact.

The webinar agenda includes an introduction by the European Commission’s DG SANTE, a presentation of the evaluation report by the independent evaluators, and a Q&A session for audience interaction. Discussions will focus on the evaluation process, the maturity and activity of the ERNs, and actionable next steps to enhance their efficiency.
