PubMed, the Internet portal of biomedical and life sciences literature, indexed an interesting article, entitled ”Metastatic spermatocytic seminoma – an extremely rare disease” (Eur Urol. 2005 Nov 8). Authors are Steiner H, Gozzi C, Verdorfer I et al., from the Department of Urology, Medical University Innsbruck, Austria. Metastatic spermatocytic seminoma is an extremely rare disease with only one documented case in literature. The authors present another patient with metastatic disease confirmed by histological work-up after laparoscopic retroperitoneal lymph node dissection (L-RPLND). Spermatocytic seminoma accounts for 2–12% of all seminomas, about half occur in men older then 50 years. Although metastatic spread is a rare event, observed case indicate the need for at least meticulous staging and some kind of follow-up in patients with spermatocytic seminoma.
